If you are looking for something different to do in Harpenden, then pop in and visit the Harpenden History Museum, located downstairs in the Eric Morecambe Centre. It’s free to visit, and as a small museum it’s perfect for combining with a visit to town or Rothamsted Park.
Displaying a range of artefacts, documents, maps and photos it tells the story of Harpenden from pre-Roman times to the 20th century. It’s fascinating to see how the town has grown and changed, and which place names, buildings and even businesses (mainly the pubs) have survived.
There’s a colouring corner for younger children, and also a quiz sheet available.
We visited during the summer holidays and had the place to ourselves, apart from the two lovely volunteers, who were more than happy to answer questions, and would love to see more people!
The museum is open on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays 11am – 3pm (subject to the availability of volunteers - please check their website to confirm the schedule).
If you are looking for refreshments afterwards you are spoiled for choice with the café in the Eric Morecambe Centre, Monty’s in the Leisure Centre, and Brad & Dills coffee shop situated in the ground floor of the flats next door.
