Browse the siteBaulk Wood has been on my list to visit for a while, so when I arranged for my toddler and I to spend the morning with friends, and the weather was looking good, we headed over. At just 10-15 minutes from where we live in Ickleford, it’s quick to get to for an impromptu walk.
It’s well signposted off the main road and the car park has plenty of space and is free to park in.
An absolute win for me too is that it’s very buggy friendly, which is unusual for a woodland walk.
Quick bit of trivia for you: the Baulk wood site actually started as a rubbish dump in the 1960s, but was restored to a beautiful public open space and woodland in the 1980s.
There are plenty of animal-inspired wooden carvings and things for children to play on, such as logs, stepping stones, balance beams and den-building is encouraged, so hunt out some hidden gems. They make for great stop-off points on a lovely walk for little legs.
Part of the trail runs alongside a stream, so I will definitely be returning in the Spring/Summer for the kids to have a splash.
There are no toilets on site, so bear that in mind.
It’s an ideal location for dog-walking too.
