Nature Trails on Harpenden Common
The route is split into four trails which are suitable for all abilities, each offering a different perspective on this incredible green space. Pick up a leaflet from the Town Hall or visit our website to download a copy - you'll find an engaging tree trail, a guide to what to look out for on the Common, a map and lots of information for inquisitive minds.
• Follow the yellow 1.2 mile trail if you're looking for a shorter walk close to the Town Centre. Discover Harpenden's Coronation Meadow and immerse yourself in the sights and sounds of a thriving ecosystem.
• Choose the blue trail for a slightly longer route, of 2.3 miles, through the orchard and grass land. This trail also takes you back in time through Harpenden's sporting heritage and pass by the old horseracing paddock where the occasional races were held on the common between 1830 and 1914.
• The red trail is 3.7 miles long, leading you into the woodlands. Our information boards are there to guide you through this route allowing you to explore the Common to its fullest - around the golf course, where you can find heathland restoration, past the hayfield where orchids grow and to the wildfowl habitat of Southdown Ponds.
• The Horse Ride trail of 3.9 miles has undergone significant work in the past three years with over a mile of path improvements undertaken to improve access for all users. This route is ideal for horse riding and cycling on the Common.
