The formal park covers an area of approximately 3.6 hectares (9 acres), and includes a wide range of features that still exist from the original park. These include rose and flower beds, extensive tree and shrub planting, the Aberdeen granite drinking fountain and the park-keeper's lodge. Has a children's playground. Also has an artificial sports pitch and a hockey pitch, and during the summer months free, turn up and play tennis courts.

The children's play area is located at the front of Greenwood Park, adjacent to Tippendell Lane. There is car parking either side of the main drive, close to the play area, but if this is full there is also a large car park to the rear of the Community Centre. The site in the heart of Hertfordshire's Green Belt, already boasts 45 acres of precious ancient woodland and is home to many rare butterflies and the protected English bluebell. Highfield Park is situated on the south eastern side of St Albans. Among the features are parkland with mature trees, a tree trail, football fields, two woods (Winchfield Wood and Hither Wood), ponds, two orchards and a maze. There are a number of children's play areas in and around the park.
