Samantha Taylor – Family Doula Support
A Postnatal Doula is someone who is there to 'support the mother (or father!)' by providing support both physically and emotionally in the weeks after a baby is born.
I have worked in the NHS for the past 30 years in Maternity Services as a support worker. My NHS journey has seen me working in all aspects of Pregnancy (ANC, Labour Ward, Maternity Theatre and Post Natal Wards).
I enjoy working in all these areas but my flair and passion is within Post Natal care. At this present time I work in the community giving help and support to Mums and families at home.
Some of my daily tasks are, Giving Advice on Feeding, whether its breast or bottle feeding as they are both important for mothers to feel comfortable with and to get it right. Part of my routine is Weight Checks, NBBS and Nutritional Advice but the most important thing I do is Listening and giving Informed Choice.
This will vary from family to family based upon their needs, but there are lots of ways I can help make the transition to motherhood run smoothly:-
• Ensure your emotional needs are met, supporting you and the decisions you make by listening to any concerns.
• Point out any concerns about yourself and baby and where to get further advice.
• Caring for the newborn so you can rest, shower or eat.
• Make time for you to enjoy a bath or shower.
• Help to feed your baby (if bottle fed).
• Support you during Breast Feeding (help & advice).
• Entertaining older siblings at your home to give you time alone with your baby.
• Taking baby for a walk, giving you time to relax.
• Undertake light household chores (washing up, hanging washing up, cleaning baby bottles, light hoovering of main rooms).
• Making teas/coffees, lunch so you can re-charge your batteries.
• Help, advice and support on bathing your baby.
• To help look after a sibling so you can have time to bond with your new born baby.
