Central Museum
Southend Museum was built in 1905-6 at a cost of £9,374 and originally housed Southend Library.
The building was commissioned and paid for by the philanthropist Andrew Carnegie, a Scottish-born American immigrant, who went from rags to riches in the steel manufacturing industry.
The building houses the wonderful finds from the Prittlewell Princely Burial, as well as the London Shipwreck and other local treasures all on permanent display. Central Museum also hosts a changing programme of temporary exhibitions throughout the year, some of which have a charge to enter, and Southend Planetarium. Please check our website for full details.
