Paxton Pits Nature Reserve
Paxton Pits Nature Reserve has lots to offer visitors at all times of year.
It is made up of a series of lakes, meadows and woodland rich in wildlife, with waymarked, accessible trails and - in usual times - a friendly visitor centre to rest your feet and get hot and cold drinks, snacks and ice creams. The Visitor Centre is also a great place to buy greeting cards, bird food and feeders as well as second-hand books.
The Reserve was given a Green Flag Award, a scheme that sets the benchmark standard for the management of recreational outdoor spaces across the United Kingdom and around the world. The Nature Reserve is open all day, every day and parking is free.
There are three waymarked trails around the Reserve, with maps located at key points including the car park. You can buy a leaflet from the Visitor Centre. All-terrain mobility scooters are available to borrow from the Visitor Centre.
The Visitor Centre is open seven days a week, 10am-4pm depending on volunteer availability. The toilets are open 10am-4pm every day.
Dogs are welcome, but please keep them on leads or under close control and out of the water. During the bird breeding season between April and July dogs should be on leads on particular sections of paths. Ensure you pick up after your dogs and dispose of the bags in the bins provided. Please be aware that the lakes and ditches may contain toxic algae.
Activities are regularly held for families at the Environmental Education Centre during school holidays.
